2018 ERCOT Black Start Training

    Overview

The 2018 ERCOT Black Start Training is two-part training course for ERCOT TOPs, QSEs and GOPs, totaling 29 hours.

Training begins with an optional ten-hour introductory course, replacing Basic System Restoration Principles, and is targeted toward new System Operators and System Operators new to ERCOT. The course focuses on ERCOT’s system restoration strategy, basic system restoration principles, and generator & transmission dynamics. It is recommended for System Operators with less than five years of total experience or two years of System Operations in ERCOT.

Following the Black Start Introductory Course is a 19 hour, simulation-focused training event. ERCOT System Operators will spend four hours preparing for day-two’s simulation by concentrating on Advanced Restoration Principles and changes to Transmission Operator 2018 Black Start plans & Contract Black Start Units. Black Start training concludes with a five hour, performance-based simulation exercise.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to identify the roles of ERCOT and the local TOPs and QSEs/Generation Operators in the restoration process and understand basic black start theory.

An operator can receive up to 10 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) for the Black Start Primer training and up to 19 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs) for the Annual Black Start training. It is at your company’s discretion as to how many Emergency Operations Hours (EOPs) you are credited. ERCOT is only responsible for the hours administered in the NERC database, SOCCED.
