2017 ERCOT Black Start Training

    Overview

    The 2017 ERCOT Black Start Training is a simulator based 19 hour training course focused on providing training for TOPs and Generation Operators/QSEs in the proper restoration of the ERCOT system in the event of a system wide black out.

    The course will include a 2 hour lecture portion the first day that focuses on Basic/Advanced Restoration Principles as well as a 1 hour lecture portion focusing on Specialized Restoration for TO/GO and a 1 hour lecture portion of simulation instruction to prepare operators for the restoration exercise. The second day will be a 10 hour simulation with interaction between the ERCOT Operators, the TOPs, and QSEs/Generation Operators. We will use the ERCOT Simulator to demonstrate our ability to restore the system from a black out event. The third day will be 4 additional hours of simulation and 1 hour of simulation critique and wrap-up.

    Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to identify the roles of ERCOT and the local TOPs and QSEs/Generation Operators in the restoration process and understand basic black start theory.

    An operator can receive up to 19 Continuing Education Hours (CEHs). ALL DAY attendance and participation is mandatory. This class is approved by NERC for full credit, no partial credit will be given. It is to your company’s discretion as to how many Emergency Operations Hours (EOPs) you are credited. ERCOT is only responsible for the hours administered in the NERC database, SOCCED.

    Prerequisites: 

    Registration is a 2-step process. Registration will only be honored if payment is made first.

    Class times are as follows:

    Tue:   12:30 – 17:00

    Wed:  07:00 – 17:00

    Thu:   07:00 – 12:00

    *Early registration cost: $225 by COB 12/9/2016. Regular registration cost after 12/9/2016: $325

    *Cancellation of registration will not be refunded for any reason.

    Audience

    The 2017 ERCOT Black Start Training is designed primarily for all TDSPs and TOPs as well as QSEs and Generation Operators who have contracted Black Start Resources as well as those who are in support roles that will be affected by a system wide blackout.

    Early Registration opens November 7, 2016 and ends on December 9, 2016.  The cost is $225.

    Regular Registration begins December 10, 2016. The cost is $325.

    01/10/2017 is the Pilot Session, It is recommended that critical staff determined by the MP attend the pilot, but registered ARs and BARs are not required.

    Continuing Education

    The 2017 ERCOT Black Start Training (ERCOT_001_2017_CYCLE1_ERCOT_BLACK_START_TRAINING) is recognized by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation as an approved learning activity for which NERC CE hours can be awarded, and that the provider adheres to NERC Continuing Education Program criteria.

    NERC continuing education hours are available for this class. If you are a NERC certificate holder you will be awarded 19 CE hours in the category of Emergency Operations, Operating Topics as well as 14 hours of Emergency Operations Simulation.  Upon successful completion of the course requirements, you will receive notification of CE hour administration in the NERC database within 30 calendar days of your attended session.
